Levels of Cover
When choosing van insurance, there are three main levels of cover to choose from. The first is third party van insurance, which is a legal requirement. It is illegal to own a van which is not covered by at least third party van insurance. Third party van insurance will protect you if you injure a third party or damage a third party property but doesn’t not protect you if your van is damaged or you suffer any injuries as a result of an accident. In this situation you will have to pay out on your own to cover any repair costs that may arise as a result of your accident.
The second main tier of cover is third party fire and theft insurance. This will cover you if your van is stolen or set alight. Although it is not a legal requirement to have this level of cover, we recommend that you look into it if losing your van would mean that your business would have to come to a halt.
The highest main level of van insurance is fully comprehensive van cover. This covers you for claims where you are at fault or the blame can’t be allocated to one party or the other.
Fully comprehensive van cover often includes things like a courtesy vehicle if yours is taken off the road and windscreen cover, for example. You are also covered, unlike the previous tiers of cover, for injuries to yourself and damages to your van. As with the previous level of cover, it is not a legal requirement to have fully comprehensive van cover but it is highly recommended if your van is essential to your business.
If you have multiple drivers of your van, you need to make sure they all have appropriate insurance. You can insure your van for any driver to use, but you will more often than not have to pay more to insure your vehicle. An alternative is to insure your van so any ‘named’ drivers are insured to drive it, this will more often than not be cheaper than insuring your van for any driver.
Deciding what kind of van insurance and what level of cover you need can be complicated. We, at Trident Business Insurance will make it easier for you and find you the best van insurance quote so you don’t need to worry.
