Bricklayer Insurance

A skilled profession requires expert insurance advice

Bricklayers are vital to the building industry. Often known as ‘brickies’ in the UK, they provide a skilled and professional service which requires hard work and dedication. Bricklayers with relevant qualifications and high levels of experience are in demand for all kinds of brickwork, block work and masonry jobs. Although the sale of houses has slowed during the ‘credit crunch’, there is still a need for new homes and for new industrial buildings. Even in the current financial climate, there is evidence of construction work to be seen in most towns, as new retail parks, public buildings and offices are still required. Bricklaying has long been a respected and essential trade, and this is unlikely to change – not just anyone can erect adequate walls from bricks and blocks. Some, however, do enjoy the art of bricklaying as a pastime. Maybe the most famous person to enjoy this in his spare time was Sir Winston Churchill, the famous British prime minister during the Second World War. As a profession, bricklaying remains a skilled form of artistry, one which also relies on a deep understanding of structural requirements. The amount of building projects that depend on bricklayers can seem staggering, but once people realise the number of individuals in this job, the need for bricklayer insurance becomes clear.

Almost all jobs in construction and related industries are potentially dangerous, and all involved need to follow strict safety guidelines, and wear appropriate safety clothing. High visibility jackets, hard hats and appropriate safety boots are just a few vital examples of safety gear for building sites. It is the responsibility both of the individual worker and the employer to ensure health and safety rules are obeyed, and that everyone is aware of potential hazards. Unfortunately, even if all precautions are followed, accidents can happen, and it is important for appropriate insurance policies to be taken out. These can cover a number of areas, for example, bricklayers should have public liability insurance, as tool and equipment cover. Employers need to ensure they have all the relevant bricklayer insurance as well, so that they are protected in the event of any injury or accident on site. There are numerous brokers and legal advisers who can provide information about which bricklayer insurance is best suited, either to an individual craftsman or to an employer. Only when satisfied that all the appropriate site or individual insurance covers are in order, should work commence.

Although a lot of people feel that many jobs are being de-skilled through the use of computers and other modern technologies, there is still the need for human ability, especially in construction. For those who are not in the building industry, it can seem amazing how quickly new buildings ‘spring up’ and it is remarkable to think that this is possible due to the skills and dedication of construction workers. It is of great importance that young people are encouraged to see that skilled trades are essential to everyday life, and that bricklaying can be a career for life.
